Cancer Surgery

Our practice offers surgical care for a variety of cancers. Our primary focus is on breast, colon, thyroid and skin cancers such as melanoma, but we also treat many others.

Breast Cancer

For breast cancers, we offer the latest surgical treatments and actively participate as members of the Breast Care Team at Coliseum Cancer Institute. Dr. Martin is the Medical Director of the Breast Cancer Program at Coliseum Medical Centers. The program is nationally accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers which means that national standards set by the nation’s leading breast cancer physicians must be met by those doctors participating in the program.

Colon Cancer

For colon cancer, we offer laparoscopic and robotic assisted laparoscopic resections, when appropriate, and routinely participate in an enhanced surgical recovery program at our hospital. This enhanced recovery focuses on better preparation for the surgical procedure, surgical approaches using the latest techniques, shorter hospital stays and quicker return to work and activities.

Thyroid Cancer

For thyroid cancers, we routinely use closures that utilize hidden suture techniques leading to minimal scarring and also are able to avoid using drains in most cases.

Melanoma (Skin Cancer)

For melanomas, we offer sentinel node techniques for the evaluation of cancer spread, and we work closely with our colleagues in plastic surgery to ensure the best overall results in healing at the primary excision site.

Advanced Techniques

Some of the technologies we utilize include sentinel lymph node biopsy; minimally invasive surgery techniques for colon resection; and advanced procedures for breast cancers, such as combining a lumpectomy with a breast lift or having immediate reconstruction after mastectomies, which can often be done with skin- and nipple-sparing techniques. We utilize the SPY, which is a fluorescence imaging technique that uses an infrared laser and a green dye given intravenously. Tissues, such as skin flaps from mastectomies and bowel that will be used for a reconnecting procedure (intestinal anastomosis), can be evaluated to ensure that blood flow is adequate for healing. The helps to avoid complications postoperatively. More detail is offered on each of these techniques in the section of each type of cancer surgery.

Accreditations and Recognitions

Both of our surgeons participate in nationally accredited cancer programs on campus at Coliseum Cancer Centers. Dr. Martin is the chairman of the Cancer Program at Coliseum Medical Centers and he is also the medical director of the Breast Cancer Program.

Commission on Cancer

The Commission on Cancer (COC), which is part of the American College of Surgeons, is an organization recognized worldwide for its excellence in Cancer Care. We meet standards set by this organization for the treatment of cancer.

Recently, the CoC granted three-year accreditation to the cancer program at Coliseum Medical Centers. Coliseum Medical Centers has maintained this accreditation since 2000. Dr. A. Keith Martin, Chair of the Commission on Cancer and NAPBC committee, said, "Residents of middle Georgia should be proud to know that they have an accredited cancer program at Coliseum Medical Centers. The physicians and staff of this hospital work very hard to insure our patients receive quality cancer care."

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers

We are accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), which is overseen by the American College of Surgeons. This accreditation requires centers to maintain a group of standards that help to deliver the best care to patients with breast diseases. We are held to a high standard and are evaluated in three-year cycles to make sure these standards are met by all of the physicians that participate.
